As a kind of parallel saying, idioms is an important part of Chinese vocabulary, which is often being used to express ideas vividly in people's daily communication. Simultaneously, idioms is the most active and lively part of Chinese vocabulary, and is the fixed language structure formed in the long historical precipitation, containing profound Chinese culture.The first part of this paper introduces the topic purpose, the status, the contents and the methods of this research. The second part summarizes the predecessors'research achievements, lists and analyzes some typical academic points of views about the connotations of idioms. Based on these fundamental work, the paper makes a definition of the idioms simply, points out the differences between idioms and proverbs, and between idioms and Xiehouyu. The third part refers to the cultural layer method of Culturology. On the basis of numerous statistical analyses of the idioms, it applies the theory of cultural linguistics to practice, so the cultural connotation of idioms is divided into four levels—physical culture, institutional culture, behavior culture and mental culture. Thus, we can find out the rich social and cultural contents in the idioms. Combining cultural connotation of the idioms with idioms in foreign Chinese teaching, the forth part discusses the idioms in foreign Chinese teaching from the perspectives of cultural teaching and cultural introduction. Therefore, we can conclude that the compilation of the idioms dictionary should pay more attention to the cultural factors, as far as method is containing, that the idioms cultural courses should be opened, the idioms cultural teaching practices and the Chinese learners'spirits of culture inquiry should be increased and encouraged too.Discussing the cultural connotations of the idioms and revealing the hidden social and cultural contents of the idioms could help language learning and cultural communications, especially assist Chinese learners in understanding and using the idioms accurately and properly in language communications.
