On The Influence Of The Greek And Roman Mythology Upon The English Language And Literature

The Greek and Roman mythology is an important part of the ancient culture which has vast and deep influence on the whole western culture. Its great influence upon the English language and literature is beyond description. A great number of words and allu- sive idioms in the English language come from the Greek and Ro- man mythology. The English writers composed their works espe- cially poetical works by drawing inspiration from the Greek and Roman mythology. They used allusions to the Greek and Roman mythology frequently in their works. The English learners 慍an?t understand the English works full of such allusions, to say nothing of appreciating them if they don?t have enough knowledge of Greek and Roman mythology. The study of the Greek and Roman mythol- ogy not only helps us to understand and appreciate English poetry, but also helps us to enhance the aesthetic sense which we need to appreciate other literary works not treating of the Greek and Ro- man mythology.
