Owing to the inseparable relationship between language and culture, learning a foreign language will inevitably involve learning the target culture. This thesis deals with the analysis of cultural factors that generate problems in English-Chinese communication. Through comparative analysis, it discusses cultural factors unique to respective cultures and the cultural conflicts that result from unawareness of the differences of those cultural factors in their application in cross-cultural communication. After concluding that cultural factors bear paramount importance in foreign languages learning, the thesis provides some strategies for foreign language learners, aiming at promoting their cultural awareness and mutual understandings in cross-cultural communication and facilitating the process of foreign language learning.
