This is an atternptive Study on the effect of shadowing exercise in the acquisitionof simultaneous interpreting (SI) Proficiency. The study is an empirical one-Supported by theories from expenmental psychology, cognitive Psychology andinterpreting researh, the author endeavors to find out whether shadowingexercise plays a Positive role in the improvment of SI competence. The roles ofshadowing exercise are identified in the rehearsal of working memory load, in theautomation of learned Strategies. and finally in Gle's Effort Model. To furtherexplain the effect of shadowing exercise in simultheous interpreting. anexplanaory and longitudinal experiment is designed and carried out. In thisexperiment, Subjects are divided into control and experimental groups. For theconvenience of operation. rundom sampling is not conduted. namely the subjectSare not assigned randomly to the experimental or the control group. This is forfear that once the students kmow that they are the SUBJECTS of an experimentand that the score of the course does no count in their academic performance, uncontrlled problems like absence, indifference, and unwillingness to cooperatemay arise. Two tests, a pretest and a Posttest, are conducted on the two groupsbefore and after the experiment. The two tests mean to score the subjects on digitspan, pbrase span, proposition recall, and speed of speech. The results revealsignificance in the digit span and speed of speech performance between theexperimental and the control subjects. And all of the four tested parameters showtrends of interceghon. Given sufficient time of trainining, the experimental groupshall achieve significan progress over the control group.
