ZI TONG is a dictionary written by Li Congzhou in South Song Dynasty, which traced back to the origin of regular script's composing pieces. It embodies special important value of references for us to understand both the multi-value of Zi Yang Shu and the various characteristics and origin of ZI TONG of Song Zi Yang and Tang Zi Yang. This thesis arranges the collection and research of in the following aspects by setting it into the clue of the development of the Tang and Song Zi Yang Shu.First, the thesis analyzes the special values of the methodology and the contribution of Zi Yang Shu to the traditional Chinese philology, namely, the application of Zi Yang as the norm of character, and the focused research on the evolution of officisl and regulsr script at the mean time. The multi-angle which should be borne in the analysis of Zi Yang Shu is therefore cleared.Second, by analyzing the present situation of the research on ZI TONG, the thesis claims that the main reason why ZI TONG has long been misinterpreted is that it is usually studied unilaterally without considering the history of the development of Tang and Song Zi Yang Shu. As a result, this thesis makes sure that the basic method to study ZI TONG is to restore the connotation of its important terms and make objective comments on its style and content by integrating ZI TONG into the development of Tang and Song Zi Yang Shu. Based on that, it discusses the special contribution and limitation of ZI TONG to the research on the norm, the formation and the evolution of Chinese character.Third, the thesis clarifies the writing purpose, as well as the possibility and the inevitability of the completion of the book.Fourth, the thesis sorts out the history of Zi Yang Shu and other Zi Shu prior to the completion of ZI TONG, restores the real intention of ZI TONG's style, and assesses its value as well as its imperfection.Fifth, the thesis analyzes the composing theory of Chinese characters included in ZI TQNG, in particular, distinguishes the different use of "Mou Cong Mou" in Tang andSong's Zi Yang Shu and SHUO WEN ,and the detailed description of the particular view shined onto the Chinese characters by Zi Yang Shu, which breaks the limits of radicals in SHUO WEN and makes possible the systematical study of the composing pieces of script in Qin Dynasty. ZI TONG is just a product of this theory.Sixth, the thesis clarifies the particular view of Zi Yang Shu on the study of the character form evolution and the theoretical contribution and concrete description of "Li Fen Li He" theory in ZI TONG.Seventh, the thesis explains the character conception and significance on the norm of Chinese character which embodied in ZI TONG.Eighth, the thesis points out the significance of studying ZI TONG.. It helps us to learn the characteristics of Zi Yang in South Song which is different from that in Tang Dynasty, enriches our understanding of the theoretical products of the evolution of Zi Yang Shu and character forms, provides us with cases to understand the theoretical methods and limitations of Zi Yang Shu and Chinese characters evolution, and also offers examples for us to learn New Confucion's influence over philology in Song Dynasty.
