The paper mainly discusses the structure and formation of Chinese and English abbreviations with numbers, and the roles of them as well. The main points of the paper can be summed up as following:1. Structures of Chinese abbreviations with numbers and the comparison with the structure of their English translations, e.g. simple-structure abbreviations (abbreviations containing a number and one or two Chinese characters, the character can be the first, middle, or last one from the original word.) ;compound abbreviations which consist of two or three similar simple-structure abbreviations; abbreviational phrases with numbers put at the beginning as the attributive or the end as the key word; abbreviations in which the position of the characters drawn from the word is not fixed; phrases summarizing the ideas of different words; abbreviations made of metaphors; ordinal abbreviations; dates; numerable abbreviations; abbreviations with time, quantity, category, etc. as restriction; abbreviations with the numbers in different order; abbreviations coming from foreign languages.2. Structures of English abbreviations with numbers and the comparison with the structure of their Chinese translations, e.g. simple-structure abbreviations (abbreviations containing a number and the initial of the original word.) ;compound abbreviations which consist of two similar simple-structure abbreviations; abbreviational phrases with the numbers using as the attributive or key word; abbreviations in which the position of the letter drawn from the word is not fixed; phrases summarizing the ideas of different words; abbreviations made of metaphors; ordinal abbreviations; dates; numerable abbreviations; abbreviations with time, quantity, category, etc. as restriction;abbreviations coming from foreign languages.3. Chapter three consists of the functions of the abbreviations with numbers. They are simple and convenient, providing a great deal of information. They can also reflect the development of the society.The conclusion chapter mainly involves the tendency of the development of abbreviations with numbers. Besides, the problem of indefinity of the abbreviations should be concerned as well.
