An Exploration And Practice Of The Eclectic Mathod For CET In China

This paper is to develop and explore an eclectic method for college English teaching in China. Based on an analysis of Grammar Translation Method, Audio-Lingual Method, Communicative Approach and the prevalent analytic method in China, a conclusion is drawn that an eclectic method is suitable for college English teaching in China. An eclectic method which combines the advantages of GTM, ALM and CA is explored and practiced in college English teaching. A teaching experiment with the eclectic method was carried out. The effectiveness and feasibility of the eclectic method was tested.The paper is divided into eight parts. Chapter One is introduction in which the problem to be solved in the following chapters is presented. Chapter Two gives a brief introduction of the three teaching methods GTM, ALM and CA. The characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of the three teaching methods are discussed. Chapter Three, by comparison of four pairs of concepts concerning GTM, ALM and CA, analyses the possibility of compromise of GTM, ALM and CA. Chapter Four illustrates the characteristics of the teaching method for college English teaching prevalent in China to lay a foundation for further exploration of a suitable method for college English teaching in China. Chapter Five discusses the theoretical bases and advantages of an eclectic method and points out that eclectic method is a desirable method in Chinese context. In Chapter Six and Chapter Seven, we explore the feasibility and effectiveness of the eclectic method with a teaching experiment. Finally, the conclusion summarizes the whole paper.It is hoped that the current research and discussion in this thesis could be of significance in college English teaching in China. And we are expecting further researches in this field which can enhance CET in China.
