Rooted in practice, based on the widely used, successful theory of task-based language teaching in second language teaching abroad, and combined with the characteristics of Chinese and the features of the listening and speaking course, this paper proposes a task-based teaching pattern in intermediate course of Chinese listening and speaking. This paper starts with an analysis of the status quo of Chinese listening and speaking course. Then, the task-based language teaching theory (TBLT) is reviewed in terms of its origin, theory basis, definition, basic principle and its distinctions from traditional teaching methods. The author also explains the feasibility of the TBLT's application to listening and speaking practices. Next, the task target, language target and cultural target of intermediate course of Chinese listening and speaking are presented with specifically designed tasks of five kinds. Further, three questions are discussed, namely how to exchange the roles of teachers and students, how to deal with the relationship between structure and function, and how to control the use of communicative technique.Following all these, the author presents a three-step task-based teaching procedure of intermediate course of Chinese listening and speaking with a detailed teaching record. Finally, the author taps on four remaining questions: availability of TBLT textbooks for Chinese teaching, inclusion of more language materials from real life settings, the adaptability of teachers and students as well as the evaluation of the teaching results.Although task-based teaching pattern is a new attempt in the field of teaching Chinese as a foreign language and difficulty of putting it into practice is expected, it can at least be integrated with other teaching approaches and make teaching more efficiently. The author hopes that this paper may inform the course of listening and speaking with respect to teaching methods, and be of some referential value in reforming the current situation of listening and speaking course by improving teaching efficiency.
