The transference of style has long been one of the most delicate and intricate problems in literary translation. The great classical Chinese novel Hong Lou Meng is not only known to nearly every household in China but also accepted in the world. Since 1830s, it began to be translated into dozens of languages including English, French, German, Japanese, Russian, etc. Red-ologists, critics and many scholars have been discussing the style transference in its translation. This book is not only for the richness of its content but also for its successful incorporating with almost all the techniques of literary merit developed in the previous period. All these verses, with a high artistic value, are also the indispensable part in Hong Lou Meng. This thesis, with the application of Liu Miqing's theory of stylistic translation, intends to give a tentative study on the style transference in the poetry translations in Hong Lou Meng from the angles of stylistic formal markers and non-formal markers. It takes six parts to present a comparatively reasonable exposition of the subject: the introduction part gives different understandings of "style" and the characteristics of poetry; the first part briefly introduces the poems in HLM; the second part is the statement of Liu Miqing's theory of stylistic translation; the third part gives an analysis on the rendering of style about the poems in HLM; the forth part deals with the limitations in transferring the poetry style; and the conclusion part gives a summary of the paper and proposes some problems to be developed.
