A Study On The Purposes Of Selections In Translation From The Perspective Of Social Macro-cultural Context In China

This dissertation studies the purposes of selections in translation from the perspective of social macro-cultural context in China. It aims at exploring the relationship between social macro-cultural context in China and the purposes of selections in translation.After the summary of the definitions of culture, the paper gives the definition of "macro-culture". Combining with the meaning of "context", it explicitly puts forward the concept of "social macro-cultural context".As we know, the top-ranking rule of Skopos theory is that a translational action is determined by its aim. And the aims are varied. Fan Xiangtao and Liu Quanfu (2002:25) put forward "the idea of 'multi-leveledness of translation purpose'". The process of translation is a process of selecting, and all the selections are purposive. Therefore, selections in translation are purposive. Then, from four aspects: selection of translation materials, selection of words and phrases, selection of translation strategies and selection of translation theories, the paper analyzes the purposiveness of translational actions and explores the extratextual factors that exert influence on the purposes of selections in translation. Next, in accordance with the view on social existence and social consciousness of Marxist Historical Materialism, the paper points out that social macro-cultural context which has objectivity and the purposes of selections in translation which have subjectivity are interactive.In order to further explain the interactive relationship, combining with the Chinese and Western translation theories from the perspective of social macro-cultural context in China, the paper makes a detailed analysis from three aspects. It thoroughly expounds that the purposes of selections in translation are controlled, determined and constrained by social macro-cultural context in China, and the reflection and reaction of the former on the latter. Meanwhile, the paper puts forward the idea that translation actions should be consciously and closely combined with social macro-cultural context in China so that translation cause can be greatly pushed forward.
