Chinese character is the key as well as the difficulty of Chinese teaching. The quality of character compilation will affect the quality of the Chinese teaching materials. Based on three sets of Chinese teaching materials which are compiled by mainland China, this paper sets up a database which contains all the characters of the three Chinese teaching materials. It also summarizes the rules of character compilation through analyzing the similarities and differences of the three materials on character quantities, character selection and organization. Furthermore, this paper puts forward some suggestions on the character compilation:Firstly, the character quantities should be controlled on its coverage of reading materials. There is a tendency for the character quantities to cover more than 90% of reading materials, that is to say 1500-2000 characters. And characters should be allotted to each grade and volume according to the students' situation.Secondly, we can widen the scale of character selection, and the characters can be selected according to their frequency and construction in order to indicate the Chinese character attributes. And then the characters decided should be compared with the results such as the Frequency of Characters and the General Outline of Chinese Level Vocabulary and Chinese Word's Rank, so as to ensure the high coverage of characters.Lastly, a scale about the character organization should be made to improve the scientific of the Chinese teaching materials. Moreover, the reappearance of the characters must be investigated to ensure the effect of the reappearance of characters which should be master.
