The teaching of Chinese characters has always been the hardest point of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL) in the past decades. Recently, the teaching of Chinese characters has got the attention of academics. Compared with the other essential teaching elements, it fails to catch up with the development of TCSL. The reason why it fails comes to the fact that Chinese character system is complicated and that it lacks of proper Chinese characters’textbook.Textbook plays an important role in teaching process. Not only it can give teaching instructions, but also can improve teaching quality. In order to change the current situation of teaching Chinese characters, we can start from the research of its textbook. Currently, there are huge numbers of different types of textbooks. However, most of them are hardly applied to the teaching of Chinese characters. Recently, the independent Chinese characters teaching materials appeared. It based on the Chinese characters. It highlights teaching characters in course arrangement, textbook writing, and teaching methods. It starts a new way in learning Chinese characters. Plenty of analysis and researches are based on the Chinese characters teaching content of intensive reading textbooks. The study on the independent Chinese characters’textbooks is not enough, though it is well applied to recent teaching revolutions. The paper makes a study on the compiling of the Chinese characters textbooks. We select two textbooks as the research object. They are "Chinese Character Breakthrough" and "Learning Chinese Characters from Ms. Zhang". These two textbook exert great influence in teaching Chinese characters. We try to make a thorough analyze on their selection of new characters, the knowledge of Chinese character, the teaching modes and the practice of Chinese characters. By summarizing their advantage and disadvantage and investigating creative measures, we can compile independent Chinese characters textbook in a more scientific and reasonable way, so as to promote TCSL home and abroad.
