20th century is the period during which Chinese painting has changed and developed greatly and steadily , featuring the constant innovation of Chinese painting language. A case in point is ice-snow landscape paintings explored by Yu Zhixue in 1960' s and given birth to in late 1970' s. The thesis argues that the artistic language reflected in the ice-snow landscape painting can be regarded as an epitome of the innovations both of the fine arts in northeast of china and of Chinese landscape paintings in the new period. The author is to expound the standpoints in this thesis as follows. Firstly, artistic ideology and conception derive not only from the external influence of the ideological trends in art but also from the artists' internal artistic cognition . Secondly, the innovation of the artistic language correlates closely the changes of the painting materials. Thirdly, On the basis of preserving the fundamental and traditional features of Chinese painting, absorbing and applying the borrowed factors are indispensable to create the new artistic language of it.Based on some first-hand information and the analysis of paintings by Yu Zhixue at different periods, the thesis explores the process of the development of artistic language in his ice-snow landscape paintings since 1960. Introduction apart, the thesis consists of five chapters. By exploring the contributing factors of artistic language in Yu Zhixue' s ice-snow paintings and the specific social environment and his personal experiences , the 1st chapter , on one hand , focuses on the sources and development of Yu Zhixue' s outlook on painting . On the other hand , it also presents the ideological basis and aesthetic concepts from which ice-snow paintings develop. In the 2nd chapter the author accounts for in detail how Yu Zhixue creates the artistic language in his ice-snow paintings by discovering painting techniques, which are quite different from the traditional ones , from the land configurations of the black soil in the northeast of China.
