Culture, as a relatively invariable and static entity, has great influence on both international communication and language learning today. Foreign language learning, especially translation, will be much influenced by attitude towards culture and cultural aspects of language. Language is the carrier of culture and language learning is culture learning in some sense. The experience of learning a foreign language also invariably modifies learners' perception of their own language and culture. Foreign language-culture education is gaining more and more importance with the increasing need of communication at different levels. Intercultural language learning involves developing with learners the awareness of their own language(s) and culture(s) in relation to an additional language and culture.Translation is the behavior of intercultural communication in nature. It involves language as well as culture and promotes understanding among different countries and nations. Translation study, in fact, is inseparable from learning culture. Both the theories and skills of translation are branded by the influence of intercultural communication. The intercultural awareness is one of the basic requirements for an translator when he or she participants in the intercultural communication, which is a particular way of thinking, a criterion for judgment or an acute sensitivity to cultural elements consciously or unconsciously cultivated by the translator. The way of thinking and the judgment criterion which are embodied in the intercultural awareness are often considered to be the yardsticks to evaluate a translator's work.Intercultural awareness development is important to translator. Lack of understanding is a failure to translate parts of or all of what the other person is saying or doing. The lack of understanding the concept of intercultural awareness requests finding ways to promoting it on a daily basis in translation study today. In what ways is the translation learning experience enhanced by intercultural awareness? How can intercultural awareness be integrated into the translation learning process? As research on these questions increases, we are cultivating cultural fluency —awareness of the ways cultures operate in communication in translation, and the ability to respond effectively to these differences.The dissertation provides opportunities to explore the broad areas of culture, communication, and translation. Based on the nature of translation as intercultural communication behavior, the dissertation provides an introduction to the fields of. intercultural communication, translation and intercultural language learning on intercultural awareness. It examines the history of intercultural communication and some culture-oriented translation theories, focuses mainly on the relation between intercultural communication and translation. The dissertation defines translation as translating culture, expounds the importance of the intercultural awareness in translation. Following the analysis of key elements influencing intercultural communication and translation learning, the dissertation elucidates some approaches to enhancing the knowledge of intercultural awareness and basic training ways in translation study and practice on intercultural awareness.
