The Relation Between Liang Zhangju's Calligraphy Annotations And Weng Fanggang

Liang Zhangju (1775-1849), who was born in Changle, Fujian province , is a famous calligrapher and collector of artistic works in Qing Dynasty. Liang Zhangju lived in the period covering the reign of Qianlong, Jiaqing and Daoguang, during which Epigraphy was in prosperity and calligraphy of inscription was developing. This thesis intends to probe into Liang Zhangju' s association with Weng Fanggang, his teacher , and the influence of Weng on Liang' s calligraphy annotations in this historic background.This thesis focuses on the investigation into the following three issues:Firstly, starting the with discussion about association between Liang and Weng, this thesis probes into the influence of Weng on Liang' s artistic career, especially on Liang' s collection of and writings on epigraphy and calligraphy after Liang was forty years old.Secondly, this thesis probes into the relationship between Liang and Weng in academic attitude, research method and field. This thesis stresses the common features shared by Liang and Weng which are absent in epigraphists who do not excel in calligraphy in comparing the quantity and form of the characters between rubbings made earlier and those of the later period and in their aesthetic appreciation of calligraphic works.Finally, This thesis sums up Weng and Liang' s calligraphy thought and reveals the features: the first is that Li style of this period is based on the style in Han Dynasty as a model and this initiates a new approach to calligraphic creation; the second is that the aesthetic thought of Tie school was revealed to a certain extent and was influenced by the block-printed edition and by the thought of Li style.
