As an indispensable part of translation studies, translation strategies are where translation theorists lay their interest. This dissertation presents diachronic and synchronic studies on translation strategies. To make the introduction more objective, a detailed survey of the studies on translation strategies at home and abroad is made respectively in this dissertation. After reading and analyzing relative articles or works, this study finds that: of the studies on translation strategies, quite a lot blurred the ambit between translation strategies, translation methods, and translation techniques. Some range D&F into translation strategies from macro angle (a few including neutral between D&F), some others range various translation techniques or translation methods into translation strategies from micro stratum. The study abroad mainly focuses on the two levels of translation strategies and translation techniques with few materials about literal and free translation being mentioned. However, in the studies of translation strategies in China, the three terms have a lot in common. On the basis of the studies on translation strategies at home and abroad, this dissertation concentrates on the realization of "translation strategies". Accordingly, this study goes as follows:First of all, in the subject of the dissertation, what is the realization of translation strategies is given as follows: the realization of translationstrategies in this dissertation refers to the trimming of translation strategies, translation methods and translation techniques during translation process. It aims to clarify the relationships between the three terms and their respective extensions.Through the analyses on the relevant materials about translation strategies, this study gives a detailed discussion on the realization of translation strategies, i.e. the differentiation between translation strategies, translation methods, and translation techniques. To attain this goal, this study adopts the method of questionnaire and statistics to give an objective as well as scientific support. In addition, this study is based on system theory with hierarchic and organic as its main characteristics. Briefly, this study is concerned with such areas: the definitions of "translation strategies", strategy, method, and technique; the necessity of the study on the realization of translation strategies confirmed by the result of the questionnaires; the theoretical framework set through system theory; and the realization of translation strategies. In the main body of the whole dissertation, this dissertation introduces and analyses the questionnaire designed for the confirmation of the realization of translation strategies first. Through detailed analysis on the questionnaire, a conclusion is reached that it is necessary to study the realization of translation strategies. The theoretical framework of this dissertation is also presented in this part. With the guidance of system theory, this dissertation compares the different definitions of "strategy, method, and technique" before describing the interrelations between them. Comparison of studies on translation strategies at home and abroad is presented in this part too.In the conclusion, the dissertation makes systematic and methodological analyses on the realization of translation strategies. The method of realizng translation strategies is given in this part. When related to translation practice, the level of translation strategies should include D&F. Although the scope of translation methods is narrower than that of translation strategies, it is wider than that of translation techniques. So translation methods should be intervenient between translation strategies and translation techniques. The L&F, "changing translation", and "whole translation" etc. should belong to translation methods. As to AOTA, no matter how they vary, they are not beyond the level of words, so they belong to translation methods as concrete techniques. Indicated with a formula, the relationship between the three terms usually should be: if translation techniques translation methods, translation methods e translation strategies, then translation techniques e translation strategies, but translation techniques ^translation strategies, and translation methods ^translation strategies. Therefore, the three terms construct a hierarchy under the general translation strategies. They belong to different levels but share some overlapping. At last, this study gives a definition of translation strategies: "Translation strategies" is a generic term for the intent a translator has when he translates the text from SL to TL. It is characteristic of hierarchy with translation strategies, translation methods, and translation techniques as its major constituents. Of the three terms, translation strategies is on the top level, translation methods the second, and translation techniques the lowest. The three terms are manifested with domestication /foreignization, literal/free translation, and delicate techniques likeamplification, omission, transferring, altering, etc. respectively.
