The 21st century is a time of intellectual economy. Ever since China was open to the world, design education in China as well as Chinese economy has been increasingly developed. Under the influence of changes in politic and economic situation, art design education, which has witnessed an abrupt shift from industrial art education system to modern design education system, is now brought into full development and heading to its maturity. Compared with those of western countries, however, the level of art design and design education still shows some inadequacy in that the system and purpose of art design education is not clear enough, the concept of training is a little conservative, and the theory development, practical experience and achievement accumulation are not quite consummate. Therefore, it is necessary to reexamine the traditional thought pattern and seek the approach to reforming art design education under the impact of modern art basing upon the current situation of art design education in China.This thesis intends to probe into art design training requirements at the new economic time and the scientific pattern of art design education/teaching in China. The whole thesis bases its exploration and discussion on the evolvement of the concept of 'art design' in China, the transmutation of Chinese design education from the traditional pattern of industrial art education, the current situation of Chinese art design education at new economic time and the challenges it faces, together with the principal problems in Chinese art design education/teaching. Thepurpose of this thesis is to gain some insights into the direction in which Chinese design education is heading at the new economic time and into the transform of traditional education conception so that our education, bearing new orientation, tenet, and conception, can be more adaptable to the new economic time to produce students of high quality, creativity, and ability.With the deep-going reform of higher education system, it is necessary to explore the remaining problems of Chinese art design education in order to enhance the art design education system reform in colleges and universities, and every step in this field will be of great practical significance to standardize and consummate the Chinese-specific education system.
