The kinetic description is an indispensable descriptive tool in fiction. Fictional kinetic descriptions are to some extent more vivid, profound, informative and expressive than the fictional dialogue description. Therefore, it is necessary and useful to treat the translation of fictional kinetic description as a separate research subject. Some scholars have tried to carry out studies in this field and some related papers have been published in several professional magazines. But perhaps limited by the room available in the magazines, none of them seems to be systematic and comprehensive enough. In view of this, the present author hopes to carry out a methodical and comprehensive study of the translation of fictional kinetics in this thesis. The author will introduce Nida's functional equivalence theory as the macro translation theory, and then under this theory carry out a detailed study of the micro translation techniques that can be used to realize the functional equivalent effect. This thesis falls into eight chapters. Chapter One is a review of nonverbal communications. Kinetics is the most important component of nonverbal communication; therefore, the discussion begins with nonverbal communication. Chapter Two is about Kinetics. Kinetic descriptions in fiction are the written form of kinetics, and consequently a study of the Kinetics is inevitable. The first two chapters mean to provide background knowledge of the subject of the thesis, which can lead to a more thorough understanding of it.Chapter Three deals with kinetic description in Chinese fiction, including its characteristics, functions and significance.Chapter Four makes an analysis of the definition of translation, summarizes the translation theories both at home and abroad as well as the research done in literature translation, and ultimately illuminates the author's research strategy. That strategy uses Nida's functional equivalence as the macro translation theory to carry out apractical study of the micro translation techniques that can be used to realize the functional equivalent target.Chapter Five gives a brief introduction to the research that has been done by some scholars in the field of fictional kinetic translation. From Chapter Six to Chapter Eight, an analysis is made to clarify the way that the micro translation techniques achieve functional equivalence in fictional kinetic translation on three levels: the lexical level, the syntactic level and the cultural level.
