Bilingual Education Act was the first act to affirm the use of language other than English.English and another language have the same station in public school. During the following 30years, the act was amended for five times in 1974,1978,1984,1988 and 1994, that made theact maturity and suitable. The importance of this act is that it gave all the children equalopportunity to study in the public school using their native languages. But the controversyabout it had never been terminated. The English-only movement and official languagemovement brought strong effect to it. In 2001, the congress passed "No Child Left Behind"that in fact terminated the life of Bilingual Education Act.The main body of this thesis contains three parts to analyze US Bilingual EducationPolicy.The first part introduces the reason of its formation including the social environment.The second part discusses the course of the formation of US Bilingual Education Policy.By analyzing the Bilingual Education Act of 1968 and the following amendments and findingout the advancement of each amendment, in order to show its adaptability to the socialdevelopment.The third part includes the problems of this policy and the controversy caused by them. Itcontains the English-only Movement and No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
