During the "five dynasties period" the relations among nationalities are complicated, which are the succession and development of Late Tang dynasty, and have crucial effects on that of Song and Yuan dynasties. Nowadays, in the field of study, the researchers have more contributed to relations between Tang and Song dynasties, but seldom studied the nationality relations of five dynasties from Tang to Song. Yet, scholars have shown more concerns on questions about certain nationality. The northern nationalities as a whole have never focused on, thus, the existed study lacks the overall and systematic features. Accordingly, the study on the relations between northern minorities and empires in central plains will be necessary and important, which is helpful to thoroughly understand the nationality relations in the five dynasties as well as all over the China.The thesis intends to find out the characteristics and developing features of relations between northern minorities and empires in central plains by study on their spread and their political and economical and cultural relations. The thesis is divided into four parts.The first part is the introduction, which is mainly concerned with the current study on the relations between northern minorities and empires in central plains, researching materials, methods and researching meanings. Nowadays, none of works is born to study the focus. Therefore, the study on this respect is instructive.The second part is chapter two, which introduces the spreading trends of northeast minority nationalities and northwest minority nationalities in the periods of five dynasties, so that the relations can be clearly presented.The third part is the main body including chapter three, chapter four and chapter five. The third chapter substantially explores the political relations between northern minorities and empires in central plains. According to their own strength and weakness, the northern minority nationalities communicate with the empires in central plains in different ways such as presenting tributes, conferring a title, granting the official position and war, etc. The fourth chapter investigates the economical relations between them. Influenced and stimulated by the advanced civilization of central plains, the agriculture, livestock farming and handcraft industry of northern minority nationalities...
