Beginning with the discussion on the westernization movement between Fujian and Taiwan Province in the 1860s-1890s, by using the acade-mic method of combining the history and theory, the writer not only gives a detailed account on the origin, background and symbol of the westernization movement in this period, but also touchs on its main content, its difficulty in developing and its influence. According to the writer, he holds that the symbol for the beginning of the movement is the establishment of Fujian shipping bureau, which is the creation of movement. The main content includes the enrolling and training of new-style army, strenghtening the coastal defence; developing thenew-style industry ,and setting up the new-style education. Futhermore, the writer also carried on the inspection to the fund-operation of the movement, then he believes that the fund-deficiency is the main cause leading to the failure of the movement. At the same time, the writer analyses the barrier appeared during the implementing process of the movement and the influence it took on the society. Byanalyzing all aspects of the movement, the writer argues that the westernization movement is for the first the time the modernization in this area, which has had a significant influence to the Fujian and Taiwan area. Nevertheless, as a result of all sorts of historical and environmental factors, the movement finally could not move forwards successfully.
