With the rapid development of China’s technology industry,domestic and international technological exchanges and information sharing are becoming increasingly intertwined.English-Chinese translation of scientific and technological texts is playing an increasingly prominent role in facilitating international information exchange.However,the specialized content of scientific and technological texts presents many challenges in the translation process.The resolution of these difficulties is crucial for readers to fully comprehend and apply professional knowledge.Therefore,the translation practice of scientific and technological texts is of great significance.This translation practice selects chapter five of The Invisible Universe as the source text.The original text is about 10,000 characters,and the target text is about 16,000 words.The original text has objective content,accurate wording,rigorous logic,and possesses the stylistic characteristics of scientific and technological texts.Scientific and technological texts belong to informative texts.The translation of this kind of text mainly aims to objectively,accurately,normatively,and concisely convey professional knowledge and information in relevant scientific fields.This report is guided by Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory,summarizing the difficulties and solutions in the process of achieving equivalence at lexical,syntactic and textual levels between the source and the target text.It provides a more in-depth exploration of the Chinese translation of scientific and technological texts.At the lexical level,the original text often uses technical terms and nominalized structures,and the translator adopts methods like literal translation and part of speech conversion to achieve lexical equivalence.At the syntactic level,the original text mostly uses long or complex sentences and passive voice,and the translator adopts the translation methods like reorganizing sentence orders and shifting passive voice to achieve syntactic equivalence.At the syntactic level,the original text is rigorously logical,and the translator adopts the methods of omission and amplification to achieve textual equivalence.To produce satisfactory translation,the translator not only gathered authoritative information and built background knowledge to fully comprehend the source text,but also thoroughly reviewed the translation for several times.This practice enables the translator to enhance her language skills and translation abilities.In addition,this translation practice report also provides a reference for the translation of scientific and technological texts under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory.
