The Conveying Of Cultural Information In Translating Traditional Chinese Medicine

With the ever-increasing cooperation and communication between nations, the issue of cross-cultural communication is gaining more and more attention throughout the world by people of all domains. And through enthusiastic discussions and studies, many people have realized that culture is all-inclusive and the language, the main means of communication, is closely related to culture. Besides, scholars have realized that translation, whose working object is language, is also a form of communication and it is also closely related to culture Moreover, it is well known that equivalence is an ideal goal in translation and many translators and theorists have been searching for closest natural equivalence between languages. In order to achieve this aim, one of the difficulties waiting to be overcome is how the cultural information can be conveyed effectively. Among various theories of translation that have emerged both in the Eastern and Western world, Eugene Nida's "functional equivalence" is one of the most widely accepted principles, which can be best understood as "equivalent effect". It shades light on cross-culture communication and translation.Chinese medicine and its culture have always been considered as the quintessence of our country, and with the carrying out of the policy of reforming and opening our door to the outside world, more and more Chinese medical texts need to be translated into English. Therefore, this thesis, serves as a tentative study to explore effective methods for Chinese-English translating by means of analyzing some practical examples of Chinese medicine translation based on Nida's "equivalent effect principle".This thesis consists of six parts. The first part is the introduction, including a brief introduction to the relationship among language, culture and translating, equivalent effect principle, and the main purpose and the framework of this thesis. Then, in order to illustrate the importance of conveying the cultural information contained in Chinese medicine documents, chapter one proceeds with the introduction to the close relationship between culture and language, in which translation equivalence is also discussed.
