A Study Of "the Chinese Business English"

As a new form in the world Englishes, the current Chinese English has attracted attentions from learners and scholars, but their studies mainly focus on whether The Chinese English is a practicality or language variety, or on its pronunciation, vocabulary and text. Actually, The Chinese English is a gradual and steady development of the English, standard or unstandard, used in China. The early form of The Chinese English was The Chinese Business English.The author of this thesis, first of all, generally introduces the origin and the development of"The Chinese Business English"with Canton English as its earliest form. Canton English was a kind of English variety created and used by the Chinese people living in Canton during their practice of foreign trades with westerners. Canton English was fully developed during the 30s~40s of the 19th century. After the opium war, the trade center began to shift northward, a kind of English learning method labeled with court dialect gradually replaced Canton English in the port cities, and became the mainstream of"The Chinese Business English"during the 50s~60s of the same century. Because the book The Chinese and English Vocabulary (1843) introduced this English in detail,"The Chinese Business English"in this stage was generally entitled The Chinese and English Vocabulary. The third stage of"The Chinese Business English"was the one labeled with the pronunciations of different dialects. After the 60s of the 19th century, Shanghai became the largest port city doing foreign trades, so"The Chinese Business English"came into its full development period, labeled with dialects was named after a place in Shanghai. Pidgin English reached its peak in the 1880s, and there was still a large number of people using this kind of English from the 1930s to the 1940s.
