A Different Sort Of World

In this age of globalization, it has become inevitable for TV programs to become internationalized. As there must be some sort of interlinguistic problem in the process, the consequent need for interpretation, with that for simultaneous interpretation in particular, come into being.The first chapter gives a brief review to the history of SI for TV and the relevant definitions. Broadcasting simultaneous interpreting has been widely developing in European countries. Recent years have also seen its development in China. This chapter tends to classify the programs that apply simultaneous interpreting into two sorts– interview programs and live coverage of sudden events. It also expounds the advantage of applying SI in making the programs go live.Dubbed as a totally"different world"from ordinary simultaneous interpreting, SI for TV is used for mass communication and is accordingly characterized by its unique features in terms of logistics, expectancy, settings, contents, participants, and quality of interpreters themselves, etc. Chapter two aims to sketch out the dimensions of SI* for TV and analyze its special challenges compared to the traditional simultaneous interpreting in conference settings.The third chapter illustrates how a new professional interpreter's profile is created with regards to TV broadcasting. Some argumentative problems in media interpreting are also introduced in this part.Having analyzed the inherent rules of mass communication, the last chapter gives an optimistic future prospect of SI for TV.As a tentative study in the field of broadcasting SI, this paper tends to suggest that the importance of this typology of interpretation brooks no ignorance to it, and that future studies on broadcasting SI will surely be of great value.
