Based on the developments in the learning areas in music education in primary and secondary schools between China and Japan for more than 100 years since the 20th century, the thesis makes a horizontal comparative study on the ideas, goals and the learning areas in the music education at school between the two countries in neoteric times, modern times and new century. Summing up the characteristics of the development of the learning areas in the three times between the two countries, this thesis studies the differences and the similarities of the development of the music learning areas in different historical periods.This thesis includes the following four sections:The introduction part studies the purpose, the significance, the scope and the content of the task, then gives a synthetic presentation of the research result and status of the related issues, and at last lists the music-related definitions and the major research methods.In chapter 1, The comparative study of the contents of music education in neoteric Chinese and Japanese schools, the thesis is grouped into 2 periods of time of modern China with 1919 as the division year; while modern Japan is divided into 2 periods of time, the beginning and establishment of singing education. After the elaboration and comparison of the ideas, goals, development of learning areas during the two periods in the two countries, the chapter points out the similarities and differences of the music learning areas in the two countries.In chapter 2, The comparative study of the modern music teaching contents (learning areas) in modern Chinese and Japanese schools, the thesis divides modern China into 3 periods: the founding period of PRC, the Cultural Revolution and the Reform and Opening period; while modern Japan is divided into 2 periods: the development and the prosperity periods of singing education. Then the chapter analyzes and compares the characteristics of the education goals and the music learning areas, and discusses the differences of the two countries' music learning areas.In chapter 3, The comparative study of the learning areas in music education in Chinese and Japanese schools in the new century, the thesis takes the "teaching areas" and "learning areas" of the "Music Curriculum Standards" and "The guideline of learning"(music) as the study object. The chapter discusses the differences and similarities of music learning areas in the two countries from different angles of the sense of value, the curriculum concept and education thought, etc. At last we get a conclusion, the music contents in the curriculum system develop into a more scientific degree, but the study of theory in the learning areas delays and needs to be further strengthened.This study provides useful and available reference and theory basis for the revision of music curriculum standard and the development of the music education in our country's school.
