In recent years, the research of verb reduplication "vv" on grammatical significance mainly focus on synchronic level, and the diachronic research is weaker. From Tang dynasty when "vv" was produced to Qing dynasty when it quickly developed, the clue to its development on grammatical significance wasn't clear. Therefore, this thesis mains to discuss the development of "vv" on grammatical significance in Tang Song Yuan Ming Qing. The whole paper includes four parts. The first part is a preface, which simply introduces the research value, current research situation, the research approach and material applied by this thesis. The second part is an emphasis of the paper.Firstly, the author observes and analyzes how the quantitative significance of "vv" develops from Tang to Qing. During Tang and Song dynasty, the verb reduplication "vv" was on early degree, meaning indefinite little quantity. The indefinite little quantity can be divided into degree quantity (lightness) and time quantity (transitoriness), both of which can be more differentiated. From Yuan dynasty on, the indefinite little quantity also includes times quantity (few) besides degree quantity (lightness) and time quantity (transitoriness). The grammatical significance approaches modern Chinese.Secondly, the author analyzes the subgroup of verb, because "vv" constituted by different subgroup indicates different significance. For example, "vv" composed by durative verb means time quantity (transitoriness), by semelfactive verb means degree quantity (lightness) or times quantity (few) or means both, by conversational verb means both degree quantity (lightness) and time quantity (transitoriness), and if "vv" is made up of abstract verb ,it just indicates degree quantity (lightness).Thirdly, the second part also discusses how the functional significance of "vv" develops from Tang to Qing. The inspected items include compositions acted by "vv", compositions following and decorating "vv", and constructions entering "vv".The third part tries to explain the production and development of the grammatical significance on "vv".The last part is a conclusion. The author concludes two rules about the development of "vv" on grammatical significance in Tang Song Yuan Ming Qing, and points out some deficiency in this thesis.
