A Research On The Nominalization Tendency Of The Double Syllable Verb In Modern Chinese

Since the beginning of 50's, the topic of the nominalization tendency of the double syllable verb in modern Chinese has been regarded as a difficult problem by the linguistic circles of China, because the time of the argument about this issue was so long, and so many scholars took part in the controversy. It has been a focus in the Chinese grammar since then.Many scholars explained the motivation of nominalization tendency mainly from the viewpoint of grammatical system, but we think that the exterior condition played a great role in the process of the nominalization of the Chinese double syllable verb in a special historic period. So this paper tried to discuss the motivation of nominalization tendency of Chinese double syllable verb on standpoint of the influence of exterior condition on the system. The content of this paper included the following parts:1, We quoted all opinions from Chinese grammar circles on the topic of the nominalization tendency of Chinese double syllable verb roundly, And then commented their shortcoming.2, In Synchronic perspective, we gave a static description about the precise data and percentage about the nominalization tendency of Chinese double syllable verb. Finally we reached the conclusion that the tendency is obvious, because 92% of Chinese syllable verb underwent process of nominalization at different extent.3, In diachronic perspective, we summed up the data and percentage of the nominalization tendency according to the Chinese classic literature, and compared the Chinese literature after "the revolution of may 4^th(五四运动)" and "the foundation of the PRC(新中国成立)" with that before the Qing dynasty, Our conclusion is that the nominalization tendency hadn't ever appeared in the classic Chinese.4, In Cross-linguistic perspective, we compared the data of the nominalization tendency of the Chinese double syllable verb with the counterpart in some foreign languages such as English and Japanese, We found that almost Chinese double syllable verb which underwent the nominalization corresponded nearly with the English nominalization verb, and at least 93% of Chinese double syllable verb borrowed from Japanese had finished their course of nominalization. All of this indicated that the foreign language exerted a deep influence on Chinese in the special period by means of translation and loan word.
