"Double-syllable Verb + single-syllable Noun" structure (dV+sN hereafter) predominantly corresponds to attributive-head relationship, the evidence of which lies in the investigation of genuine corpus and in contrast among various dV+sN structures. Beginning with and based on this correspondence, the thesis focuses on the following two points:1) Causes of the correspondence between DV+SN and attributive-head structure:The nature of "2+1" syllable combination (2+1 hereafter) accounts for the correspondence. "2+1", the rhythmically highly cohesive combination was correspondingly projected onto syntax as attributive-head structure. Meanwhile, its high level of cohesion and conformity, which entails the preference of "2+1" as its phonetic representation, features "V+N", an attributive-head structure.2) the conditions on which dV+sN exhibits attributive-head relationship:"2+1" intrinsically, but only possibly, exhibits attributive-head relationship due to its high level of cohesion, in terms of providing an optimal frame. The grammaticality of dV+sN depends also on some other factors such as the very nature of dV and sN, respectively, and whether the two elements behave in classification relationship. Finally, facts concerning dV+sN exhibiting Verb-Object relationship are explained as the profundity of this thesis could possibly go. |
