A Study On Controversial Translation Cases In The Diplomatic Field From The Perspective Of Evaluation

Under the circumstance of globalization and with the development of the economy, China's international status has been on the rise. Increasing exchanges with the international community and participation in the diplomatic activities are putting diplomatic translation in a more important position. The complicated international circumstances and the sensitive nature of diplomatic work result in frequent appearance of controversial translation cases which also pose higher requirements for translators.A multi-level evaluation theory put forward by Martin Cortazzi and Lixian Jin (2003) is not only concerned with attitudes and ideology the writer expresses in the discourse, but also the evaluation of the readers to the text and the writer. In light of the multi-level evaluation theory, the author builds a three-layer evaluation model which is applied in the analysis of the controversial translation cases in the diplomatic field: The issued diplomatic translation texts convey the evaluation of governments or institutions to certain diplomatic issues; readers make evaluation to the translation and then controversial translations come into being; people form corresponding evaluation to the government or the institutions through the final determined translation version.The author carries out meticulous and overall analysis on every level of the generating process of the controversial cases in diplomatic translation with the application of a three-layer linguistic evaluative model, tentatively probes into various factors such as the national interests, ideological diversification, cultures cognition, international circumstances and historical background contributing to specific diplomatic circumstances and conducts comprehensive analysis to the determining mechanism of the diplomatic translation version in China.The thesis is not confined to the examination of the C-E and E-C translation skills or techniques, but attempts to discuss about the social value of translation from the perspective of ideology and political stance, etc. To be specific, it aims at revealing the social function of translation through analysis of controversial translation cases generated in some heated issues.
