There were three great Anti-opium Movements in modern Chinese history, in which the Anti-opium Movement at the end of Qing Dynasty was the most effective one. During the Late Qing Dynasty, the Southwest area of China was always a large opium-producing center. The thesis is to study the fact and the far-reaching effects of the Anti-opium Movement from 1906 to 1911. It includes a lot of Chinese and English materials, especially On The Trail Of The Opium Poppy ----- A Narrative Of Travel In The Chief Opium-Producing Provinces Of China, which is not used before. The thesis is divided into 6 parts:The first part is about the reasons and main course of the Anti-opium Movement at the end of Qing Dynasty. It talks about the bad effects of the largely growing of the poppy and smoking of the opium. Both the advanced Chinese and priests, foreigners requested to stop them. It forced the Qing Government to work hard to ban poppy-cultivating, opium-smoking and the opium trade. With the co-operation and participation of the people, the movement produced a good result finally. The second, third, fourth, fifth parts study the course of the Anti-opium Movement of the four provinces in Southwest area of China in detail. They tell us how the provincial governors and Governor-gentries did for it. They also examine the attitudes and actions of the governors, gentlemen and the fanners. The last part discusses the relation between the Anti-opium Movement and the economy. The success of the Movement forced the Government to explore all possible ways of bringing money or revenue. So did the provincial governors of the Southwest area of China. The measures which were taken pushed the Anti-opium Movement forward. In a word, the Anti-opium Movement at the end of Qing Dynasty had an important status in Anti-drug history of China. This article excavates massive Chinese and English primitive references and materials, for example, Shen Paper, Political Official Newspaper, Diplomatic Newspaper, the Chinese Record in GuangXu times, "the Materials for Chinese Suppressing drug" and The Opium Trade 1910-1941, especially On The Trail Of The Opium Poppy - - A Narrative Of Travel In The Chief Opium-Producing Provinces Of China still was used for the first time at present. The Chinese and English materials cooperate mutually, causing the content of the article to be more substantial, the argument of the paper to be more real, to be more credible. This article uses a lot of foreign primitive files to study the situation of the anti-opium movement in Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi carefully and concretely. This is a great progress. In addition, the essay studied the attitudes and reactions of the gentlemen and the farmers. Thus it becomes more concrete.
