The world-wide soaring popularity of Chinese learning and the rapid development of Chinese distance education have lead to higher requirements for courseware making of TCFL objectively. Using XML technology for knowledge representation of TCFL web courseware can achieve standardization, structuring and individuation of courseware development more easily. It not only facilitates the sharing of teaching resources, but also the maintenance and updating for teachers and developers.Based on the present application of XML, this paper analyzes the application of XML technology in the field of second Language education and the advantages in knowledge representation. Concerning the subject characteristics of TCFL, this paper also taps and designs the knowledge representation of web courseware. The first chapter of the paper analyzes the feasibility of knowledge representation based on XML, providing an overview of application both at home and abroad while analyzing the advantages of XML in knowledge representation. On the basis of analysis of the current courseware production and the script compilation, we find that it's very necessary to represent knowledge and design markup language for web courseware. Then, by analyzing knowledge representation and application for TCFL, we design a Markup Language TCFLML for TCFL courseware. The third chapter analyzes the structure of TCFL web courseware and summarizes the basic components of TCFL web courseware. The fourth Chapter designs TCFLML, including defining the attributes of knowledge and DTD document. Finally, the fifth chapter gives an example of TCFLML. First we design a TCFLML implementation model, then a teachers` interface, including design principles and the rules of ID, followed by a demonstration of the interface. The last step is to design XML and XSL. The sixth chapter summarizes work that has been completed by the paper and points out some deficiencies and further work that we need to do, and then give a preview to the application of XML in TCFL web courseware.
