With the rapid development of globalisation and international communication, C-E news translating plays an increasingly important role in China's global communication (or 'external communication'/ 'overseas publicity', as preferred by some scholars). This background calls for a suitable translation theory guiding such practices. This thesis deals with China's C-E news translating for global communication from a perspective of functionalism. After evaluating the findings and limitations of previous studies in relevant disciplines, the author sets forth that C-E news translating is a communicative transaction process involving various participants such as the sender, the translator, the audience, etc. other than a simple code-switching process. The translator in this process has to bridge the striking intra-textual gaps in news lexis, syntactics, structuring, etc., and to cross the extra-textual barriers in communication conventions, interpretations of news values, etc., between English and Chinese news.Christiane Nord's functional approach brings together the strengths of previous functional approaches and includes a systematic translation-oriented text analysis model. Based on the comparison between Chinese news and English news both extra-textually and intra-textually as well as based on such a functional approach which has been paid with less attention to than the Skoposthoerie, this thesis proposes a possible model for the global communication process of C-E news translating. After illustrating the functional translating process with chosen case studies, the thesis testifies that the approach in question is not only suitable for China's global communication, but also easily operable for the translator.
