The research of mandarin and teaching Chinese as a foreign language (TCFL) has a reciprocal relationship. The former guides and supports the latter; and the latter verifies and promotes the former. This paper is based on the reciprocal relationship of modal auxiliaries and TCFL.Every modal auxiliary has its unique features. Their meanings and usages are very confusing. So they are the key point and hard point in TCFL. They are inclined to be misused, to be lost and to be confused than any other verbs. The available studies can hardly meet the demands of teaching and studying. For the sake of TCFL, this paper focuses on some lost parts in available studies of modal auxiliaries and discusses some related aspects' important functions in TCFL, combining with the errors of foreign students.This paper is divided into six parts:Firstly, this paper reflects on current reaches and establishes its contents.Chapter 1: discuss how to name modal auxiliaries and their definition..Chapter 2: guided by the prototype-based category, establish the typical and atypical members of modal auxiliaries.Chapter 3: based on the meaning, divide modal auxiliaries into six subcategories: modal auxiliary verb, necessity auxiliary verb, permission auxiliary verb, ability auxiliary verb, wish auxiliary verb, evaluation auxiliary verb.Chapter 4: analyze modal auxiliaries' functions in expressing time. Point out their effects on the temporal feature of the sentences and VP. Combined foreign students' errors, point out this problem's functions on TCFL.Chapter 5: based on the theories of speech acts and politeness, analyze every subcategory's functions on illocutionary acts and politeness. Point out its valuations on TCFL.Chapter 6: discuss some reflection of related theories.
