As a major branch of English for science and technology, medical English texts often contain a great deal of medical terms, which require translators to pay attention to not only logical coherence and language quality, but also the accuracy of terminology. However, authoritative terminology dictionaries, databases and parallel texts are still not sufficient in serving as references for medical translation. Some terms do not have standardized translation, which brings difficulty to translators and reflects that there is much room for improvement of medical terminology standardization. The medical terminology is mainly borrowed from Latin and Greek. For the translation of medical terms, the authoritative medical dictionary and standardized medical terminology list issued by China National Committee for Terms in Sciences and Technologies are reliable references. This thesis selects Cancer Neurology in Clinical Practice as the source text.Chapter 12 of this book on cerebrovascular complications of cancer is carefully translated and analyzed. This thesis will divide medial terms into three categories according to the standardization condition for each of the term:terms with/without accurate and standardized translations and new terms without any reference. To deal with different categories of terminology, translators should adopt different methods for comparison and analysis, and follow the principle of accuracy, readability and transparency as far as possible.Through the translation practice, the author has concluded three points in terms of medical terminology translation:(1)examined and approved translation should be used in preference;(2)translators should carefully distinguish and examine terms with more than one translation;(3)translators may put forward proper translation for terms without standardized translation based on thorough research.Through this report, this thesis aims to provide translators with a specific translation process of English medical texts for reference, help translators to better understand the method of analyzing and translating terms, improve the quality of translation in terms of scientificity and accuracy of terminology, and contribute to the standardization of medical terms to better serve the medical development.
