| Terminology refers to the technical words or expressions that are correctly used to identify objects,phenomena,characteristics,relations and processes in fields of production techniques,science,arts,social life,etc.Terminology transmits crucial messages in scientific texts;therefore,translators should regard terminology standardization as the common target when doing EST EC translations.Domestic and foreign experts and scholars have been studying EST terminology,but failed to give deserved attention to EST terminology standardization.This translation report was based on an engineering specification(ENGINEERING SPECIFICATIONS--INSPECTION 85*).On the basis of more than ten years'translation practice,the writer's analyzes the status and function of EST terminology in scientific texts and mainly discusses two points:one is the five translation methods typically used in ESP terminology EC translation—liberal translation,transliteration,semantic transliteration,pictographic translation,and zero translation;the other is about the nine principles of EST terminology standardization—monosemy,scientificity,systematization,conciseness,conventionality,conceptualization,stability,internationality and connotation characteristic consistency.Terminology standardization is a long and arduous task.Nowadays,the abuse of translated sci-tech terms still exists,which is incommensurate to and even constrains the daily development of science and technology.The writer believes that feasibility of terminology standardization is practical only if the government,translation organizations,translation administrations and translators work together and strive for it.By writing this translation report,the writer hopes to arouse the awareness of more sci-tech translation enthusiasts to pay attention to terminology standardization.The writer gives some suggestions to sci-tech translation enthusiasts and is willing to work together with them to realize sci-tech terminology standardization as early as possible. |
