There are two different semantic elements in sentences, that is, "topic" and "mode". "Topic" refers to the objective fact the speaker tries to express; "mode" refers to the subjective part in a sentence, which is the expression of the objective fact. Study on Japanese mode is a promising subject not only in Japan but also in China, which is just on the theoretical phase. This paper studies the mode of verbal predicates in modern Japanese imperative sentences, that is, the mode in the end of sentences. The imperative mode in the end of sentence of Japanese determines the mode of the whole sentence, so when we say imperative mode, it refers to the mode in the end of the sentence. Unlike Chinese and English, the predicate in Japanese is often put in the end of a sentence, which is the center of the sentence. The mode followed is an important grammar in Japanese. To the Japanese learners as a foreign language, that is a difficult point. So the study on the imperative mode is worth its value not only in the theory but also in the Japanese teaching.Japanese teaching and research in China must based on "being in China". This paper is rooted on the teaching practice and makes an empirical study on the mode of verbal predicates in modern Japanese imperative sentences, which has some innovation in the following eight aspects:1. Based on the teaching practice, redefine the Japanese imperative mode, and categorize it into seven kinds, that is, order, requirement, prohibition, persuasion, permission, wish and induction.2. Follow the former research and make some necessary amendment.3. Former scholars made the study from the aspect of pragmatics, this paper makes some amendment on this and studies the constructing conditions from the aspect of syntax.4. Using descriptive linguistics and referring to the research results through habitual ways of expression, study in detail the seven kinds of imperative mode from the aspect of semantics.5. Take the expressions of Japanese imperative mode as the foundation, make a theoretical study on the ways of expressing Japanese imperative mode according to the general linguistics.6. Referring to the relative research by former scholars, make an empirical study on the features of the predicates before the imperative mode from the such aspects as syntax, semantics and pragmatics. 7. Take the former research results of the study on the relationship between Japanese imperative mode and the subject and make some amendment.8. Referring to the relative research on Chinese imperatives, make a theoretical study on the expressions of the Japanese imperative mode controlled by the context of the Japanese imperatives.
