This thesis makes a brief research on medical translation, with the purpose to provide theoretical and practical guidance for medical translation so as for the target text to be identical to truthful and scientific information of the ST, to be terse and comprehensible, clear and natural for the readership and to conform to norms of medical papers.This thesis consists of five chapters, main content of which is as follows:Chapter One: a brief introduction to medical English including the history and importance of medical translationChapter Two: Some important stylistic features of medical English are analyzed. From lexical level, Latin, Greek, Neologisms and some other features are presented. Structural features include the frequent use of nominal structure, passive voice, long and complex sentences and non-finite verbs. In the end, the types of medical writings are discussed.Chapter Three: Three criteria of medical translation, including accuracy, succinctness and normality, are discussed.Chapter Four: This chapter lays down the core theoretical foundation of this thesis by means of conducting in-depth researches into communicative translation and semantic translation. The chapter begins with the background of CT and ST and the definitions. Then we turn to the comparison between CT and ST and text typology. Based on the above research, the summary is made then.Chapter Five: The theoretical guidance and practical significance of semantic translation and communicative translation for medical translations are testified. Medical terminology, collocation, synonym are first discussed. Then the thesis turns to the syntactic level including the research on passive voice and complicated sentence. Finally a case study is presented from a macro-level.Conclusion: Brief conclusion is drawn and some deficiency of this thesis and direction for further research are pointed out.
