A Study Of Agricultural Development In Kuomintang-reining Regions Of Shanxi Province During The War Of Resistance Against Japan

During the War of Resistance against Japan, a great regard was shown for agriculture by Kuomintang authorities due to the significance to supply the needs from the army and the civilian. Shanxi Province, located at the juncture linking the east and west of China with comparatively productive advantages, was highly regarded for its agricultural development.A prosperous time ever appeared when a series of agriculturally favored policies stimulated the economy. In the meantime, plenty of limitations and problems emerged one after another. The inappropriate disposition with these problems by the Kuomintang authority caused the later agricultural stagnation and recession and eventually broke down with the downfall of Kuomintang. It is of great value for contemporary western development to research the rise and decline of the agricultural development in Kuomintang-reining regions of Shanxi Province during the War of Resistance against Japan.The dissertation consists of the following five parts:Part I is the introduction. It defines the researched object and introduces the significance of the study and the instruments, the main points and the difficulties in the dissertation;Part II elaborates on the situation of Shanxi Province in the modern history and provides a general picture of its agriculture and the rural areas prior to the War, which is in order to introduce the context of the historical events;Part III mainly discusses the policies toward the agricultural development in the rear area by Kuomintang government during the War and the implementation of the related measures;Part IV explores the effects caused by the policies in Shanxi Province; Part V is the conclusion. It reflects on the defects and limitations of the policy made by the local authorities of Shanxi Province and Kuomintang government. It lays the conclusion on the basis of historical reflection.
