Language,as the vehicle of human thought,is an important tool for communication.Translation,an integral part of human activities,is an essential method for people of different nations to communicate and learn from each other. As a matter of fact, translation plays a very important role in the course of human development.Chinese is the language that has the most native speakers, and English is the one that are used most extensively. In the twenty-first century when we are in an information age,English-Chinese and Chinese-English translations are essential to the reform and opening-up of China.Surely, when translating,we have to take a lot into account, which includes restructuring or structural adjustment,in other words. This dissertation mainly discusses the issue of restructuring, focusing on why and how to restructure in translating. This paper starts with the explanation of translation and meaning.Consisting of several sections,Chapter One gives the reader some relevant information concerning the history and definition of translation and so forth. In the second chapter, great importance is attached to translation equivalence and functional equivalence.Functional equivalence,a theory put forward by Nida,a famous American translation theorist,is the one on which this essay is based. In this Chapter the author makes a tentative comparison between translation equivalence and functional equivalence.Since translation Can not be accomplished without language,it is helpful to have a comprehensive understanding of what language is.Similarly, different nationalities that grow up in different cultures necessarily have different modes of thinking, which will inevitably cause differences in the languages they speak.Likewise, different language will make US think in a way different from that of speakers speaking another language. Then the third chapter of this dissertation mainly deals with the issue of language, culture and thought pattern. In this chapter this paper gives a detailed illustration on the relationship between language, culture and thought pattern. This chapter falls into three parts. The fourth chapter is the main body of this dissertation, centering on why and how to restructure.Supported by more than one.hundred examples found in'monographs and articles written by experts in this area, this chapter consists of ten sections with each one devoted to one reason why we should restructure and how. This chapter has something that is different from what I lave readThe last part of this dissertation is the conclusion, which gives a brief summary of what the dissertation has researched and draws the readers' attention to what we should do in the future.
