Lacquer work, Chinese traditional craftsmanship of long history, embodies rich culture and distinctive art. As a very important production base through the ages, since Ming Dynasty (1368 A.D.), Yangzhou lacquer work has developed into a school of its own, showing typical local style and deep cultural accumulation.Once an important part of furnishings in ancient times, Yangzhou traditional lacquer work has been removed out of modern life due to its limitations under the situation of rapid development of science and technology, emergence of new materials, and multitudes of living space. The main reason of the removal lies in its dissociation from modern life, which should have been taken into this art, too. So it has become a necessity to look for possibilities of opening a new window between tradition and modernity. This paper starts from the development and characteristics of Yangzhou traditional lacquer work, investigates its applicability in modern furnishing designs and the factors influencing the combination of the past and the present, and then proposes a possible further development for it based on modern furnishing design theories, with an expectation of its renewal and involvement in modern furnishing design and life.
