The Characteristics Of Narcissistic Personality And Their Relations To Parenting Patterns Of High School Students

With the development of times, people are growing concern about themselves. In the 1970s of the west was called "the ages of self. With the reform and opening carried on, Chinese show more self-confidence and concerning themselves in the culture of collectivism. This thesis plays an important role in exploring the high school students' narcissistic personality. And it is of great significance to understand people's narcissistic personality, realities and the forms of mechanism in China.Narcissistic Personality is a kind of synthetical construct of personality. A person with Narcissistic Personality tends to be very dedicated to his own image generally; He demands a lot of others' concern and has a kind of exaggerating feeling of his own importance, and feels that he should enjoy special authority and treatment, which always shows great superiority. But there are a few narcissists who feel inferior and sensitive, and the author of this thesis believes that they have Narcissistic scare which is hampered in the process of narcissistic personality development. As an element of personality, narcissistic personality is shaped under the influence of parenting pattern.According to the review of previous research on narcissistic personality, interview with narcissistic individuals, the author of this thesis worked out the original questionnaire on narcissistic personality and Narcissistic scare based on several preparatory drafts and statistic analysis. Then the self-adopted questionnaires and EMBU were administered to 516 high school students to investigate the narcissistic personality and their relations to parenting patterns. The results showed that:(1) The self-adopted questionnaires on the high middle school students' narcissism and Narcissistic scare were reliable and effective. With the method of factor analysis (EFA and CFA), four dimensions about their narcissistic personality were found: self-admiration, the sense of superiority, the desire for leadership and entitlement, and the four dimensions about their Narcissistic scare were self-admiration, the sense of superiority, the desire for leadership and sensitivity, and notably the dimensions of self-admiration, the sense of superiority and the sense of leadership were shared by two kinds of narcissistic personality;(2) Generally speaking, there was no significant difference in the narcissistic personality and Narcissistic scare between boys and girls, between students with literal arts and those with science, and among students at different grades, but significant difference in the sense of privilege existed among the students at different grades.(3) Parenting pattern played important roles in the prediction of their narcissistic personality and Narcissistic scare. Paternal overprotection, paternal preference, and maternal preference could predicted their narcissistic personality significantly, and meanwhile paternal overprotection, paternal refusal, paternal preference, paternal emotional warmth and understanding, and maternal preference and maternal refusal could predicted their Narcissistic scare significantly, and paternal preference and paternal emotional warmth and understanding could predicted negatively their Narcissistic scare.
