Research On The Relationship Between Narcissistic Personality,parenting Style And Achievement Goal Orientation Of College Students

Narcissistic is seen as a common personality trait in normal population. In recent years,narcissistic has received extensive attention in studies abroad, while domestic study is just starting, related research in psychology is unrich besides discussions from the perspective of literature and sociology. Starting from the cultivation of healthy personality education of college students, this study attempts to take the narcissistic personality of college students as the starting point, exploring the relationship between parenting styles of college students,narcissistic personality and achievement goal orientation under the cultural background of China in order to provide corresponding theoretical support on the formation of college students’ healthy personality, thus to enable students to form correct achievement goal orientation in the learning process.Specifically, s-EMBU-C(2009) revised by Jiang Jiang et al, Narcissistic Personality Questionnaire(2005) by Zheng Yong and Huang Li, and Scales for Achievement Goal Orientation by Liu Huijun et al. were used for 367 undergraduate students in Hebei University in this study. We’ve got the discriminative features in demography variables of parenting styles, narcissistic personality and achievement goal orientation and the correlation between the three psychology variables through the process of data analysis. Furthermore, we explored the mediating role of narcissistic personality between parental rearing style and achievement goal orientation. The study shows:(1)There is significant difference in overt and covert narcissism, gender, birthplace, and singleton. Specifically: The overt narcissism is significantly higher than the covert narcissism for college students, male college students’ self-admiration level is significantly lower than female college students’ both in overt and covert narcissism, urban college students’ overt superiority level is significantly higher than rural college students’, the only children’s overt superiority level is significantly higher than non-only children’s.(2)There is significant difference between gender, birthplace and singleton in college students’ parenting style. Specifically: male students get significantly higher scores in father’s rejection dimension, lower scores in mother’s emotional warmth than female students; urbancollege students get significantly higher scores in father’s emotional warmth, mother’s emotional warmth, father’s over protection and mother’s over protection than rural college students, only-child college students get significantly higher scores in father’s emotional warmth, mother’s emotional warmth, father’s over protection and mother’s over protection than non-only-child college students.(3)College students’ whole mastery achievement goal orientation is significantly higher than the whole performance goal orientation, college students’ achievement goal has no significant effect in gender, birthplace and singleton.(4)College students’ parenting style has certain positive prediction to achievement goal orientation. Specifically: mother’s emotional warmth has positive prediction to the whole mastery goal orientation, which explains 8% variances; Father’s over protection and mother’s emotional warmth have positive prediction to the whole performance goal orientation, which explain 4% variances.(5)The narcissistic personality of college students has certain prediction of achievement goal orientation. Specifically: the authority factor of overt narcissism has positive effect on the whole mastery goal orientation, which explains the 7% variances; Authority and entitlement of overt narcissistic, vulnerability of covert narcissistic have positive prediction to the whole performance goal orientation, which explain the 20% variances.(6)College students’ parenting style has a certain prediction effect. Specifically: mother’s emotional warmth has positive prediction effect to overt narcissistic, mother’s over protection and rejection has positive prediction effect to covert narcissistic.(7)Narcissistic personality has a mediating effect between college students parenting style and achievement goal orientation. Among them, the overt authority has full mediate effect in the prediction of mother’s emotional warmth to achievement goal orientation, the rest mediate partially.
