A broader and deeper research on international relations can be achieved with some linguistic approaches. In this thesis, the linguistic approaches used by the U.S. government like semantic intention of words, semantic image and semantic strategy will be discussed on the level of semantics of words in the discourses of U.S. foreign policy. To be detail, three aspects will be included: Firstly, the social and cultural roots of the U.S. foreign policy discourses can be better understood through the analyses on the semantic intention of words in these discourses. Secondly, how to use semantic images by the U.S. government will be discussed, which may lead the American people to the better approval and stronger support of the government's foreign policies. Thirdly, how the U.S. government skillfully uses semantic strategies to construct these discourses and enhance the flexibility and deterrent force of their foreign policy will also be analyzed in the thesis.
