The rapid development of modern science and technology gives strong push to the further development of the theory and practice of foreign language learning and makes it possible to change the long-existing "time-consuming and inefficient" English teaching in China. The role that information technology plays in foreign language teaching is no longer confined to assisting teachers to impart knowledge. Instead, it serves as cognitive tools to enhance learners' autonomous learning, drive their emotions and create rich learning environments, integrating with every part of teaching process, which finally brings a fundamental reform to the traditional teaching mode.With a view to keeping up with the new developments of higher education in China and deepening teaching reform, Higher Education Bureau of People's Republic of China issued "College English Curriculum Requirements", stating that colleges and universities should remould the existing unitary teacher-centered pattern of language teaching by introducing new teaching models with the help of multimedia and network technology. In the same year, 180 colleges and universities were chosen in China to employ the new teaching model and other colleges and universities began to make positive efforts to explore the way to integrate technology into curriculum as well. The writer visited three colleges and universities of Anhui Province, attending classes and interviewing some teachers and students in order to have an understanding of the real situation of college English teaching after the release of "Curriculum Requirements".The research method employed in this paper is qualitative research. With the researcher as research tool, this method emphasizes collecting various data under natural circumstances, having a holistic exploration of social phenomenon, and analyzing data and forming theories by means of induction, the purpose of which is to have an explanatory understanding of subjects' personal experiences. The paper is made up of 5 parts. The first part introduces current college English teaching model in China and the new one proposed in College English Curriculum Requirements. The second part is the literature review of learning theories and application of computers in language teaching. The third part stresses the importance of understanding using computers in the bigger context of information age. The fourth part, after introducing the research method, makes an analysis of current teaching mode of the three colleges and universities. The last part concludes the whole paper and provides ideas for further study.
