On the basis of the relevant research, this thesis tries to illustrate the theoretical foundations, teaching principles and teaching strategies underlying the Multimedia Assisted College English Teaching (MACET) for the purpose of supplying some inspirations and references for college English teaching. With the rapid development of the information technology, especially with the quick advancement and maturity of computer and Internet technology, multimedia technology has found its increasing application in modern English teaching. The Ministry of Education of China (2004) stated in"Requirements for College English teaching"that"Considering the rapidly increasing number of college students and the relatively limited teaching resources, we should make full use of multimedia and internet technology, and apply a new kind of teaching mode to take the place of the traditional teacher-centered mode…". With the application of multimedia equipment and technology in college English teaching, there has appeared a new teaching mode --- Multimedia-Assisted College English Teaching. The appearance of this new teaching mode, MACET, brings about some changes in college English teaching, such as varieties of information representation, individualization of teaching style, diversification of learning style and autonomy of English learning environment. It demands for a corresponding adjustment of teaching techniques. More importantly, it requires a great change in the past traditional teaching strategies used to guide teaching practice. In fact, in the present MACET practice, although many teachers utilize partly or fully MACET techniques, advantages of multimedia technology have not been tapped to their full, and therefore, their teaching effect turns out to be unsatisfactory. Responsible for that are many factors, such as some teachers'resistance to modern technology or ignorance of computer and other relative knowledge. But a more important reason is that many teachers are not quite clear of MACET teaching strategy and approaches. Meanwhile, among the studies of MACET, research of MACET necessity and advantages dominated in the past while at present macroscopic studies of theory dominate. In the study field of teaching strategy, those for MACET are rarely discussed. So applying MACET theories into teaching practice and exploring the practical MACET strategy are of crucial necessity for the improvement of current college English teaching quality. In this thesis, the author first reviews the development of multimedia technology and the present situation of MACET. In retrospect, the first chapter examines problems in present MACET, and analyzes briefly the causes for them. The second chapter discusses the definition and classification of teaching strategy; then in terms of these problems in MACET practice, the third chapter probes into the main theoretical principle for MACET--- Constructivist's teaching theory and MACET practice guiding theory ---- CALL teaching approach. In the following chapter, a rational analysis is made on teaching strategies and principles guided by constructivism and CALL, giving a particular emphasis on MACET teaching strategies: stereo-input strategy, class involvement-promoting strategy, multi-channel communication strategy, culture-cultivating strategy and task-collaboration strategy. In order to make clear of how to apply these teaching strategies in MACET and the validity of these strategies, an account of one MACET class is demonstrated. Through the class demonstration, questionnaire, and interview of some teachers and students, the author evaluates the effectiveness and validity of these strategies. The results show that these strategies can promote students'English proficiency and develop their autonomous learning ability. Finally, the author touches upon some weaknesses and some difficulties in MACET classroom practice and make some suggestions on the future MACET research and practice.
