William Shakespeare, English poet and dramatist (1564-1616), is one of the most remarkable playwrights and poets the world has ever known, while Chinese traditional opera, one of the world's three ancient operas, is a comprehensive performing art with unique features of Chinese nation. It seems that Shakespeare's drama and Chinese traditional opera have nothing at all to do with each other, but with the dissemination of Shakespeare in China, more and more opera plays adapted from Shakespeare's plays are staged and the adaptation makes a great success.Generally speaking, Shakespeare's drama and Chinese traditional opera share many similarities in language, theme, structure and the form of playing—all that lays the foundation of the adaptation. On the basis of the idea that adaptation is the freest form of translation, or translation is the process of rewriting, this thesis tries to have the comparison on the two versions of Hamlet in Peking Opera and Shaoxing Opera, analysis the features of plays adapted from Shakespeare's drama in Chinese traditional opera, probe the ways of adaptation, mainly sinicization and westernization, from the perspective of translation, and draw a conclusion that any way of the adaptation is the combination of domestication and foreinization. In this way, the author tries to explore the way of translation of Shakespeare's plays. In the end, the thesis not only discusses the existed problems and limitations to adapted Shakespeare's drama in Chinese traditional opera, but also the significance and prospect of the adaptation.
