| With the rapid development of science and technology as well as the speeding course of the global economic integration, science has directly or indirectly associated with our everyday life and work worldwide. Thus how to translate accurately and concisely the foreign advanced scientific and technological inventions, events and relevent information to our internal readers has naturally been regarded as a major task by Chinese translators of science news. For the sake of better translation of science news, the paper intends to probe into the features of science news before listing the musts'and mustn'ts in the translation of science news.Starting from the lexical and syntactical aspects, the author expounds in detail about the features of science news: the conciseness and readability of common words, the extensive application of sci-tech terminologies and jargons, the emergence of neologisms in science news, and the methods of word–formation. Science news, a special kind of style in news writing, boasts its distinctive syntactical features besides the lexical characteristics that the general news has, such as the extensive use of nominalization, passive voice, non-finite verb and long sentences. In Chapter One, the author touches upon the general features of science news in two major perspectives by citing first-hand examples.Chapter Two introduces four essential and practical translation principles of science news, namely accuracy, smoothness and naturalness, understandability and flexibility with the theoretical backup of two famous translation theorists Eugene A. Nida and Peter Newmark whose"Dynamic Equivalence"and semantic and communicative translation theory are to be analyzed. In Chapter Three, the author digs into the causes behind the mistranslations of science news, before making constructive suggestions for warding off the common errors. The analysis of the common errors are woven with the application of Nida and Newmark's theory as supportive illustrations to rationalize the revised versions for the mistranslations. In Chapter Four, the author puts forward the translation strategies for science news from the lexical and syntactical perspectives in the light of the supportive translation theories mentioned in the preceding chapters.Meanwhile, in the course of expounding the translation theory and practice in science news, the author also emphasizes that the correct comprehension and appropriation of expressions are indispensable parts in the translation of science news. The translators of English science news should continuously probe into more innovative translation theory on the basis of acquiring new and specialized sci-tech knowledge and constant practice. The author suggests we translators make our efforts to acquire the latest research achievements on science news translation theory and practice in the near future. |
