The expansion of the college students is the requirement of social and economic development as well as the inevitable trend of higher education popularity. However, the teaching resources have not been improved accordingly with the enrollment expansion in universities. The enrollment expansion has put great pressure on the teaching resources, some problems, such as teacher shortage, overload of teaching facilities etc., have emerged. Confronting with these problems, some colleges adopt the large or compound classes to relieve the shortage of teaching forces. Consequently, it's quite common for some colleges to adopt the teaching model of large classes.The thesis, integrating empirical study and theory, explores the key factors influencing the teaching effect in the large-sized class teaching condition which has practical meaning to improve English teaching. The research makes explicit the overall design and proposes the hypothesis accordingly based on the previous research. Questionnaires are mainly utilized in the paper together with the document analysis and interview. It investigates 439 college students in Grade one and Grade two. The final conclusion was reached by the statistical data on the questionnaires and focused interviews:1. The results show that the class scale and teaching effect have not significant correlation. In other words, class scale and teaching effect are not necessarily related. The unsatisfactory teaching effect is not the inevitable consequence of the large-size of the class.2. In the large-sized class teaching environment, the class scale and the teachers'teaching quality or students'participation have significant negative correlation. The larger the class scale is, the lower the teachers'teaching quality and the less the students'participation is. The correlation between the class scale and teachers'teaching method and means, teacher's attention to the students, students'autonomous learning ability and learning motivation, students'performances in the class is not significant.3. In the large-sized class teaching environment, the main factors influencing teaching effect include teacher's factors and student's factors. The teachers'teaching quality and teaching method have significant correlation with the teaching effect, while the influence between teacher's attention to the students and teaching effect is not obvious. Students'participation, students'autonomous learning ability, students'learning motivation and students'performances in the class have significant correlation with the teaching effect.The writer makes analysis and discussion on the study result and proposes the practical suggestions from the perspective of college, teachers and students. It is hoped that the results can supply theoretical references and practical instructions to the college instructors, facilitate English teaching and improve teaching effect, ultimately reach the purpose of enhancing talents quality.
