All sections of the society especially higher edueational institutionsin China have paid great attention to college English teachers,teaching effectiveness because the quality of teaching in undergraduate edueation has appeared a little decline and the quality-oriented edueation has carried out in reeent years.Aiming at some serious problems in teaching,the dissertation based on the former study maiuly discusses such questions as why and how college English teachers teach effectively and how they become effective teaehers so as to improve teachers'teaching abilities and effectiveness and accordingly to promote the quality of college English teaching.Effective teaching in higher edueational institutions is defined as teaching can successfully promote the leaming and progress of undergraduates and achieve the teaching objective expected and meet the teaehing demand at the least cost.The ultimate criterion that measures effective teaching is substantial progress or development that students acquired in teaching.Effeetive teaching in higher edueational institutions is a new moden teaching idea.Effective teaching is developmental and so every teacher can become an effective teacher if only he makes great effort.Effective teaching is a multidimensional construct and so effective college teachers may not always perform perfectly in all the dimensions of effective teaching.There are some most important and fundamental characteristics about effective teaching in higher educational institutions include sufficient preparation,good organization,lesson clarity,motivating students, enthusiasm for teaching and harmonious relation between and students.If college English teachers want to improve teaching effectiveness and to become effective teachers,they should continuously struggle to capture these characteristics.After analyzing the situations about the teaching effectiveness of college English teachers at present,the thesis points out,five strategies to improve the effectiveness of teaching in classroom that are teaching clearly,conducting teaching conversation,motivating students to learn, paying attention to teaching students methods and optimizing managing teaching hours in classroom.Important ways and means that college English teachers become effective teachers are teaching training,learning and reflection on teaching.At the same time, college English teachers should learn by themselves to improve their own teaching expertise.Besides,college English teachers should reflect on their own teaching by such ways as the log of experience,teaching observation,communication and discussion and action research so as to improve the reasonableness of teaching practice and promote the effectiveness of teaching.Under this background,the thesis aims to discuss how to use effective teaching strategies to enhance teaching efficiency in the college English instruction.This paper contains 6 chapters:Chapter One supplies introduction to the status quo of college English instruction in China.Chapter Two is literature review about the previous study of effective teaching, focusing on the study abroad and at home.Chapter Three provides theoretical foundations about effective teaching focusing on the basic dimensions and characteristics of effective teaching and the key to effective teaching—the learner-centered learning and the twelve basic principles of effective teaching.Chapter Four presents effective teaching strategies in the college English instruction.Chapter Five is concerned with analysis of effective teaching strategies in practice, talking about implementation of effective teaching strategies in the college English classrooms.Chapter Six presents the conclusion of the study.Implications of the study are also discussed.
